We are on a quest sustainability and are actively seeking a green lifestyle. Patrick and I moved off the grid several years ago and have relied on solar panels for electricity ever since. We have posted our trials and successes with alternative energy, as well as plans for our off-grid homestead and passive solar home on our online journal ByExample.com.

Pesticides are sprayed over our communities on a regular basis causing us a myriad of symptoms from itchy eyes to breathing trouble and who knows what long term health affects. Protests in California have prevented the spraying of pesticides over the San Francisco Bay area - Now let's stop the chem-trails in Arizona!

Herbal remedies for pets. We have too many cats and dogs to run to the vet every time one of them sneezes. We treat them ourselves whenever possible. I found this page when looking for an eyewash solution for weepy-eyed kittens.

Genetically Engineered Sugar to hit the US in 2008! Sugar is in everything -- which means that if the production of GE sugar beets is widely adopted in the US, then almost all the food on our grocery store shelves will contain GMOs. The real kicker is that GE sugar beets will be "round-up ready" and will be engineered to withstand herbicide applications up to 5 times in one year. "Round up ready" soy and corn are likely responsible for much of the toxic herbicides that currently pollute our soil and water. The widespread cultivation of GE beets will only exacerbate the issue of toxic run-off. Major corporations like the Hershey company actually oppose the use of GE sugar beets -- this says to me that GM beets are not just bad, but really BAD.

Genetically modified crops and foods are being widely opposed around the world. Yet, the Bush administration recently proposed a $770 million aid package -- which would heavily promote, maybe even mandate the use of genetically modified crops in famine stricken countries, primarily sub-Saharan Africa. Laboratory grown meat!!?? How can this be a good idea? If you look at the concept closely you will discover that fake "shmeat" is factory produced -- which means it will require tons of energy (most likely fossil fuels) to produce and will probably result in excessive factory emissions. Beyond that unleashing unknown technologies into our environment is a recipe for disaster.
Substitute For Plastic Garbage Bags

Plastic! That's what's on my mind. This article has a few good ideas for alternative garbage bags, but more importantly it asks the question: what can we use as a substitute for plastic bags? Civilization functioned long before plastics came along, so I believe it is possible to reverse our dependency on plastics. Concerned consumers stop buying and using plastic bags and help re-create a plastic free culture.

In the Southwest US it is planting time! I have only a little experience with farming and this video on composting was a great help to me. As informative as this clip sounds you may think it will be boring, but in fact it is quite artistic - the commentary on composting is quite entertaining and is accompanied by a kicking soundtrack. I followed the instructions for making a compost pile with the "Berkley Method" which is supposed to yield great soil in just 18 days.

Plastics containing BPA are being pulled from the shelf. Manufacturers are responding to consumer concerns and studies that indicate that the hormone disrupter BPA leaches from certain plastics into food and drinks and may be a leading cause in breast cancer, prostate cancer, obesity, type 2 diabetes, miscarriages, hyperactivity and reproduction failures. I for one am going to play it safe. We already store our food in glass jars and we are switching from canned foods to dried goods. I will also be swallowing the expense of BPA free water jugs.
